Calories in...calories out..or not

Calories in calories out.  Is that kind of like in one ear and out the other? You ate something, but you exercised so those calories are gone as if you had never ingested them? Some one told you something but you didn't really listen and now those words are gone as if they were never spoken? Hmmm, pretty sure it doesn't work that way.  Whether you heard those words or not, they were spoken.  If you took those calories in then you took them in- regardless of your exercise state.

If calories in calories out were true then a calorie must equal a calorie.. Twinkie or chicken breast, it wouldn’t matter. All calories must be the same; trust me on this, they are not.  More on that later.  For now let's just think about this: for calories in calories out to hold true, those calories must exist in a vacuum.  They cannot affect or be affected by any system in the body.  If they are affected or do affect one (or more systems) body then we must look at the result of those effects and factor those results in to the equation as well.  Just to draw a picture of this, let's look at calories as a liquid. For calories in, calories out to hold true that liquid would need to be something like water. We pour 8 ounces of water into a Styrofoam cup and then pour 8 ounces out. The cup is empty. Calories are NOT like water they affect the system into which they are introduced.  Pour 8 ounces of sulfuric acid in a Styrofoam cup...and you have no more cup.  The acid has an effect on the things it comes in contact with, just like calories do.

Maybe a bank account is a better example. You put money in and either earn interest or suffer fees and penalties. The money you put in doesn’t just sit there.  The same thing happens when we eat.  We take food in.  It affects our body and is affected by our body.  A cascade of events takes place causing you to earn interest (gain weight) or suffer a loss (lose weight).  Money, just like calories, does not exist in a vacuum.

If calories in calories out DID work, then 1 out of 5 children and 2 out of 3 adults in this country would not be obese. If it were as simple as burn more, eat less, or both then it would be that simple.  But it isn’t.  If calories in calories out DID work then there wouldn’t be a billion dollar weight loss industry.  But there is.  If calories in calories out DID work then all of the people working their butts off on the cardio equipment at the gym would be lean. But they aren’t. If calories in calories out DID work then you wouldn’t be reading this.  But you are.

Lies about weight loss and the truth no one wants you to know

Ok, I have had enough.  Yes, I am at the end of my rope yet again. Probably for the same reasons I am every time.  Lies about weight loss (read:fat loss) and nutrition with respect to health.  I say fat loss because honestly, if you just wanted to lose weight you could cut your arm off and accomplish that, but I really don't think that is what you are aiming for.

We are inundated with lie after lie about why we are overweight, how fat loss works, the best way to lose fat (which is basically the same as keeping yourself from getting fat), who to seek for help, how long it will take and it is driving me NUTS!!! Why, why, why the lies?? Isn't it just easier to give people the right information..the TRUTH about how all of this works and let them decide if they want to reach their goals? Giving people misinformation that they will then follow to the letter (and fail with regard to fat loss) will only result in the eventual resignation of their attempts.  "I am destined to be fat" they think.  Trust me, I know how this works, and so do my clients.  One of my most successful clients who spent a good portion of her adulthood 90 pounds heavier than she is now is just as frustrated as I am. She spent years trying this and that and every diet around. Each and every 'plan' was failing. She wound up more frustrated than ever feeling that "maybe there was something genetically wrong with me."  She sees the plight of the overweight and pleads with them.."just try it THIS way.  This is how it REALLY works.  Trust me, I've been there and I have done it all."

"I have tried everything" is one common line I hear from people..and my answer is this..no you have not.  If you had indeed tried everything you would have learned the TRUTH about how this whole things works.  Let's stop the lies.  Here are some of the major offenders:

1. Calories in, Calories out -
2. To lose weight simply cut calories
3. Cut calories and exercise more
4. A calorie is a calorie is a calorie
5. High carbohydrate diet is the way to go
6. Too much protein will cause kidney damage
7. All carbohydrates are the same
8. All proteins are the same- and you don't need much anyway
9. Avoid fat at all cost
10. This pill/micronutrient will make you lose weight
11. Don't eat after 6 pm

I'm sure you have heard at least a few of these..heck, maybe some of you still think they are true.  I am here to let you know, unequivocally, they are NOT.  Want to know the real story?
Stick around, it is about to get interesting...

Why are there cookies at my gym?

You probably read the title of this post and figured it was just some cute line written to get your attention and that I would then be discussing some other fun topic.  I am saddened to tell you that that could not be further from the truth.  I really want to know why there were cookies at my gym.  Chocolate chip cookies. In the break room. Right in the middle of the table.  REALLY??? I resisted the urge to toss them in the trash, although to this moment I am not really sure why.

Let's back up just a little.  What is a gym and why do people go there? Searching for the definition of 'gym' you find this: noun, 1. gymnasium, 2. a membership organization that provides a range of facilities designed to improve and maintain physical fitness and health. But nothing about cookies.  In fact, I would dare go as fas as to say that by its definition cookies do not belong in a gym. Well, unless they are designed to improve or maintain one's health. I don't care WHAT kind of cookie you find, it will not do that.  I don't care if it is all natural, 100% organic, gluten free or vegan.  It is a cookie and it will not improve your health.  Therefore it does NOT belong in my gym.

Imagine yourself as a member of the gym.  You walk in all fired up for your training session, having been focused on it and your healthy eating plan for some time now, and in walks a gym employee with cookies or pizza..or better yet, what if it was a delivery man?   What  goes through your mind?  "What the..??!!"
EXAAACCCCTLY!  That is the same thing I say when I see the evidence of such goings-on.  C'mon people, you are here to help people become healthier. Leave the crap at home.  Having cookies at the gym is like leaving a brochure for shoddy hedge-fund investing in the break room of a bank.  You are going to tell people to exercise and eat healthy, then come to the break room and eat your pizza and cookies and drink your soda.  Does that make you feel good about what you are doing? Do you even think about it?
....maybe you should.

Crave knowledge? Save the internet..

Hello Friends,

If any of you have tried to use Wikipedia today or have investigated why there is a big black box over the Google logo then you are already aware of this. There are two pieces of legislation being considered by congress (H.R. 3261, also known as the Stop Online Piracy Act & Senate Bill 968, also known as the PROTECT IP Act) that if made into law would have several negative effects for the internet as we know it.  Everything I have been able to read about these two pieces of legislation leads me to the conclusion that it would be detrimental to a free and open internet if they were passed.  Please do your own research and make up your own mind but I would ask that you consider taking a quick moment to email your representative and senators and urging them to vote against this legislation.

Read more about SOPA and PIPA here:
https://www.google.com/landing/takeaction/sopa-pipa/
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more

Send this to your representative:

I want you to know that I strongly oppose H.R. 3261, also known as the Stop Online Piracy Act.  Not only would this bill be ineffective at achieving it's own stated goal but it would also have the detrimental effect of censoring the internet, hindering economic growth, and slowing innovation with regards to online technologies.  I urge you to vote against this bill.

You can find out who your representative is and his/her email address by clicking on the link below and then entering your state and zip code:

Send this to your two senators (there are two from each state):

I want you to know that I strongly oppose Senate Bill 968, also known as the PROTECT IP Act.  Not only would this bill be ineffective at achieving it's own stated goal but it would also have the detrimental effect of censoring the internet, hindering economic growth, and slowing innovation with regards to online technologies.  I urge you to vote against this bill.

The Truth About Weight Loss

It seems that after reading Tara Parker-Pope's NY Times article "The Fat Trap" http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/magazine/tara-parker-pope-fat-trap.html?pagewanted=all quite a few of us readers had the same idea to blog about it.  Most of the blog posts were praising her for finally revealing to the public the challenges that face the overweight and obese.  I have a few issues with her piece and the bloggers celebrating her unveiling of the science suggesting that the weight will just come back.

Honestly, Parker-Pope made it seem almost hopeless. Citing studies such as one in 2009 by Joseph Prioetto in Australia.  His study placed 50 obese men and women on a very low calorie diet (500-550 calories per day) for eight weeks.  Participants did lose weight, but within a year many participants had gained back about half of the weight they had originally lost.  Participants also reported feeling hungrier and thinking more about food than they had before they lost the weight.  Parker-Pope goes on to cite scientific information about the hormonal changes that occur during, and as a result of, weight loss.  She cites these hormonal changes as the reason overweight individuals are unable to maintain weight loss.

“What we see here is a coordinated defense mechanism with multiple components all directed toward making us put on weight,” Proietto says. “This, I think, explains the high failure rate in obesity treatment.”

Now, wait just a minute here.  Yes, I read the same study that shows hormones responsible for hunger and metabolism are affected, but that does NOT mean that maintaining weight loss is impossible.
First of all..WHY does someone need to go on a 500-550 calorie a day diet for eight weeks? and WHY would you expect your body NOT to fight to regain weight after such a long period of time under basically starvation like conditions? What would happen if we took a better approach to the situation maybe approaching weight loss as a lifestyle change? Yes, it will take longer to get it off, but did you become obese in eight weeks? Why then would you think that you could lose the weight in that amount of time? Maybe losing weight without such drastic measures would not result in the reported hormonal changes.

Parker-Pope writes:  "For years, the advice to the overweight and obese has been that we simply need to eat less and exercise more. While there is truth to this guidance, it fails to take into account that the human body continues to fight against weight loss long after dieting has stopped. This translates into a sobering reality: once we become fat, most of us, despite our best efforts, will probably stay fat."

She goes on to cite research that identified a number of genes which may 'predispose' people to being overweight- or even to desire fattier foods. Why not just give up now? Well, hold on she DOES go on to discuss the National Weight Control Registry.  The registry follows 10,000 people who have lost a minimum of 30 pounds and successfully kept it off for at least a year. So there IS hope! Don't worry, she stomps on that too as she mentions the extraordinary measures people go through to maintain that weight loss. One successful person has this to say: “It’s one of the hardest things there is,” she says. “It’s something that has to be focused on every minute. I’m not always thinking about food, but I am always aware of food.”

Parker-Pope interviewed Kelly Brownell, director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University who had this to say about the 10,000 people in the National Weight Control Registry: "“All it means is that there are rare individuals who do manage to keep it off.. You find these people are incredibly vigilant about maintaining their weight. Years later they are paying attention to every calorie, spending an hour a day on exercise. They never don’t think about their weight.”

Parker-Pope goes on to describe several individuals who go to great lengths to maintain their weight loss: measuring all of their food, keeping food and exercise logs, carrying a water bottle all day each and every day, exercising more than an hour each day 6 or 7 days each week, avoiding bread, pasta, desserts and eating a larger percent of calories form protein.  She has this to say about one very committed individual:
"Just talking to Bridge about the effort required to maintain her weight is exhausting. I find her story inspiring, but it also makes me wonder whether I have what it takes to be thin. I have tried on several occasions (and as recently as a couple weeks ago) to keep a daily diary of my eating and exercise habits, but it’s easy to let it slide. I can’t quite imagine how I would ever make time to weigh and measure food when some days it’s all I can do to get dinner on the table between finishing my work and carting my daughter to dance class or volleyball practice. And while I enjoy exercising for 30- or 40-minute stretches, I also learned from six months of marathon training that devoting one to two hours a day to exercise takes an impossible toll on my family life."

WOW! That's all I could say when I read her article.  So in a nut-shell she is saying that weight loss is a challenge and she doesn't think she can dedicate the time necessary to do it.  Hmmm, as a trainer I have heard THAT before..but that is not what is actually being said..what that actually means is that you don't WANT to do it.  So I would question your desire to lose weight, to be healthy, to be a good role model for your children, family and friends.  Harsh? Nope, I don't think so.  Look at it like this.  If someone wanted to become a journalist for saaaaayyy the NY Times, I'm sure there is a good bit of schooling that must be undertaken. Certain degrees attained, many hours interning, studying, writing, investigating.  Hours of interviewing and job hunting.  You may even say that there wasn't a minute that went by when the thought of this dream job wasn't in her head. Hmmmm, so if something is really important to someone they will take the time necessary to achieve that goal regardless of the time or effort it takes. Yep, I'll agree with that. So if someone will go through such great lengths to attain a degree or a job, why should  improved health or weight loss be portrayed as something not deserving of such attention?

Ohhh that's right because you can work hard and still not succeed because of those silly genes. Yes, the ones that make some of us crave fattier foods and eat more calories.  WHAT?? Ok, I'm not denying that those genes exist, clearly if scientists have identified them then there are there.  Let's stop and think about this for a moment though.  If those genes are in us NOW, couldn't it be a rather safe assumption that there were in us 50, 100, 150 years ago as well?  If so why has the number of overweight and obese continued to climb with each passing year or decade? If those genes have always been present then the numbers of overweight and obese persons should remain rather constant.  These people would also be found in many other countries and not predominantly in the United States of America.
Hmmmm..maybe just maybe it DOES have something to do with the foods (or non-foods as I see them) that people in this great country are consuming.  Maybe, just maybe it would be a worthwhile endeavor to keep a food log and spend time thinking about what we eat.

Darnit, there I go bringing it back to personal responsibility and paying attention to what you are eating. My husband and I have this conversation all the time.  It would be nearly impossible for someone to eat healthy foods and be fat.  Really, do you understand how hard it would be for you to be fat eating lean protein (meats, fish, chicken, turkey, egg..) and vegetables?

God forbid you should have to exercise.  Having to exercise over an hour a day, six to 7 days a week?? GASP! Haaaaa.  This always makes me laugh.  The human body was not meant to sit around.  It was meant to be used..to 'exercise'.  Get off your butt.  People see nothing wrong with spending 8 hours a day working a job..trying to accomplish something, to be good at something. Yet it is inconceivable to exercise for an hour?? Are you kidding me? Do you WANT to lose weight? Do you want to succeed at THAT job? If you are unwilling to spend an hour exercising, or say that you are 'unable' to do it..then your answer is 'NO!'.  I'm ok with that..just don't complain that you can't lose weight or that you can't keep it off.  You get out exactly what you put in.  If your results aren't what you want, reevaluate your approach.

So here's the truth:
Step one- do not become overweight.  It would be a tremendous challenge to become overweight eating only lean protein and vegetables.
Step two-if you are overweight, see step one.
Step three- realize that it WILL take conscious effort AND time to lose weight and KEEP IT OFF.

Delayed gratification is not something we Americans do well with. We don't want it now, we want it last week.  Repercussions? Who cares, give it to me yesterday.  This desire to have things RIGHT NOW is even more common when it comes to weight loss.  Maybe just maybe if we explained this to people we would  have a better chance of actually effecting lifestyle changes, successful weight loss AND weight management.

Be resolute...

Well here we are, January is right around the corner. You know what that means. Yep, time to make your resolutions. Don't want to be left out of the talk on Jan 1st..you KNOW everyone will be talking about their resolutions, so you'd better decide now what yours will be. I am sincerely hoping you read that with the amount of sarcasm I was typing it with...

I know it has been an entire year (well almost) and many of you may have forgotten MY New Year's Resolution so I thought I would re-post it for you.  Happy reading..and happy New Year!

New Year's Resolutions

Happy New Year everyone!!! My hope is that it will be your happiest and healthiest one yet!

One key to making this happen...NO MORE NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS!!!!!! Yes, you read that right.  Stop making them!!! I made one years ago and have stuck with it ever since....my resolution was to never make one again.  "But Michelle", you are thinking "how else will I reach my goals?"
Well, I didn't say that you couldn't or shouldn't make changes and aim for your goals, but it is absurd to think that just because it it January 1 (or a Monday or any other arbitrary day) you will somehow magically stick with those changes.  Why do you think that only 10% of the people that make resolutions actually stick to them?? Because they were the only ones READY to make the changes!!!! The fact is, you will stick to them when you are READY.  So if you feel you are ready to do it today, well then do it. If you felt you were motivated and ready on December 27th, then you should have started it then...and not waited until today...you may have lost that spark of motivation and deep desire to attain your goal.  If you are ready 2 months from now well do it then.  My point? Making resolutions when you are not ready to embrace them is a sure fire recipe for disaster and just plain stupid.  Not only will you fail to stick with the plan, you will be much less likely to attempt that (or any other) change in the future.

Yes you CAN!

Cashier: "I wish I could eat this healthy."
Me: "You can."
Cashier: "I know."
Me: "Well..."
Cashier: "I usually just eat things I can grab fast."
Me (with a puzzled look as she is scanning my raw vegetables): "You can grab these fast."
Cashier: "My 2 month old makes it hard for me."
Me: nothing..just a smile

Well, what was I supposed to say? She had all of her excuses lined up already.  Raw veggies, doesn't get much quicker than that. Blaming someone else for your eating habits gives away your power of choice.  You are at their mercy, you eat what they tell you to eat, or what they allow you to eat.  No wonder she can't eat the way she wants.
Any time you say that someone else 'makes' you do something, or any time you name someone else as a 'reason' why you are doing something or why you cannot do something, you are giving away YOUR power.  In your head you are just trying to escape the blame (really the responsibility) for the situation in which you find yourself.   Whether you realize it or not, you do not believe you have the power to make the choice. Subsequently, you never WILL make that choice.  It is time to realize this and take full responsibility for where you are as well as for where you are going.  YOU are the only one that puts food into your mouth. YOU are responsible for your choices and actions, and therefore the results of your actions as well.

More than once I have heard people discussing this diet or that diet and commenting that "anyone can do it". Citing that it isn't restrictive and you can eat anything you want.  Hmmmm...yes anyone CAN do that.  In fact, most people are doing that NOW. That would be why the majority of the US population is either over weight or obese.  More than 66% of our population falls into this category. Here's a hint: if the majority of people are following a certain 'diet', it isn't working.  It is making them fat, so step away and do it quickly.  The other part of the 'diet anyone can do' mind set that frustrates me is this--why would someone feel that eating healthy is hard, or something that not everyone can do?? That mindset is exactly what is keeping people from eating healthy.  Apparently choosing healthy foods is something reserved for only a select few.

Here are two rules for being healthy. Learn them and live them.
1. YOU are responsible for what goes into your mouth, no one else.
2. No, you CANNOT eat whatever you want (no matter what that infomercial tells you).

Pretty simple, right? The sooner you own the fact that YOU are the one that got you where you are now, that YOU are the one that keeps you from getting where you want to go, the sooner YOU can get yourself where you want to be.  You are your worst enemy or your best asset, the choice is yours.  Damn, there is that word again 'choice'.  Own the choice, own the result.

No, you cannot eat whatever you want.  Well, ok technically you can, but that will not help you reach your goals.  Well, unless your goals are to fall somewhere in between so-so healthy and completely unhealthy.  If you are looking for optimal health then it is time that you just face the facts.  Eating whatever you want is not the way to go. Look at it like this: everything you ingest becomes a part of you. A part of each and every cell in your body. If your goal is optimal health choose optimal foods.  Ahhh, that sneaky word again. Everything comes back to choice.  Choice and responsibility.  Own them.  You CAN eat healthy, you can BE healthy, you CAN reach your goals.
